DECADES

OF Sublime Perfection

Nestled in the Rathnapura-Delwala village, Vithanakande stands not merely as a tea factory but as a testament to a legacy subtly unfolding over eight decades. The journey commenced officially in the 1940s under the visionary Punchi Bandara Herath Pilapitiya, setting the foundation for what would become a beacon of excellence. In 1981, a pivotal moment arrived as Navaratna Pilapitiya, the founder's youngest son, assumed sole proprietorship, propelling Vithanakande into an era of continuous improvements and modernization.

From Ceylon's Heart to Your Cup

Since 1981, the factory has experienced a remarkable transformation. From an average daily intake of 1500 lbs. of green leaf, it now processes an impressive average of 22,000 kgms. daily, resulting in around 140,000 kgms. of finely crafted tea each month. This evolution reflects not only increased productivity but also a commitment to mastering the art of tea cultivation, seamlessly blending with the natural beauty of its surroundings near the Sinharaja rainforest reserve.

Each tea leaf at Vithanakande carries a profound purpose and tradition, deeply rooted in the rich history of the village. In 2017, the late Mr. N.B.H. Pilapitiya received the esteemed Lifetime Presidential Award, an acknowledgment that solidified Vithanakande’s status as a paragon of excellence. The legacy endures through the state-of-the-art factory, which orchestrates a symphony of flavours mirroring the spirit of Sri Lanka’s paradise.

Vithanakande’s commitment to quality extends beyond national borders, earning global acclaim through prestigious awards and accolades in renowned competitions worldwide. This commitment reached a new chapter when MG Group acquired Vithanakande, ushering in a new era for this iconic tea producer. Though the founding family played a pivotal role, the legacy now continues with a new chapter in the hands of those dedicated to upholding Vithanakande’s rich traditions.

Vithanakande takes pride in upholding the highest N.S.A., a standard that ensures top-notch quality in Sri Lankan tea. While we refrain from boasting about being the largest producer, our focus on quality over quantity defines our commitment. This dedication extends beyond numbers, contributing to the local economy, offering premium tea experiences, and showcasing the enduring spirit of Sri Lankan tea on the global stage. It’s not just about size; it’s about excellence.

This commitment not only preserves the legacy of Vithanakande but also cultivates a sustainable future for generations to come. By prioritizing quality over quantity, we ensure that every cup of tea reflects the essence of our heritage and contributes to the ongoing growth of this proud legacy.
